2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTD LT Trailboss brings the story of two trucks

Chevy has complicated the process of purchasing the 2022 Silverado 1500 even more than the usual configurations and options. There will be two trucks for sale at dealer lots, both 2022 models, one with updates inside and out, and the other carried unchanged from 2021.

The 2022 Silverado 1500 carryover will be the same truck that was introduced in 2019, but is now known as the LTD model, despite the various trim levels. Another 2022 Silverado 1500s will be an updated truck that costs $2,100 more in base form than the Silverado LTD.

I spent a week tackling winter weather in Minnesota in a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTD LT Trailboss. With a TCC rating of 5.2 out of 10, the old Silverado reminded me of the good and the bad before the updated model finally replaced all the LTD in the dealer lot. This is what I learned.

Hit: Crazy 6-way tailgate

GM is shifting the 6-way power tailgate to the Silverado lineup in 2021 and it’s an attractive option for $445. Admittedly it borders on overkill, but I appreciate the concept of over-engineering because you can. Kudos to you, GM. Folding in three different places, there are six different ways to configure the tailgate to extend the length of the bed, act as a bed holder, or create two-step access to the bed, among other functions. It has the most configurations of any tailgate on the market. Whether it’s necessary or not is debatable, but it’s impressive.

Miss: Interior

It’s surprising that the current Silverado was introduced as recently as 2019. The interior looks a generation behind what’s found in the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500, the latter of which was also redesigned for 2019. The plastic is tough and the grain is missing. ‘ doesn’t feel or look good. The touchscreen is only 8.0 inches and can’t multitask or show split-screen displays. The leather seats feel cheap, and the entire interior is dark with only a hint of chrome plastic. An updated image of the 2022 Silverado 1500 reveals an apparently nicer interior.

Hit: Smooth V-8 power

The My LTD LT Trailboss Silverado is powered by an optional 6.2-liter V-8 with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque for an additional $2,495. It’s connected to a slick 10-speed gearshift automatic transmission that doesn’t have the same low-shifting hiccups found in some Ford F-150 models. This is not the most luxurious motorcycle. It has no turbocharger and hybrid system. But it’s sturdy, sounds great, and is a pleasure to drag or push. This engine will carry over into the refresh. Chevy hasn’t confirmed whether the power ratings will stay the same, though we hope they will.

Miss: Drink gas

While the big V-8 is smooth and sounds great, it thirsts for EPA city ratings of 13 mpg, 17 highway, and 14 combined. The outside temperature was below freezing and didn’t help the truck. The onboard trip computer shows an average of 13.9 mpg over 150 miles of mixed suburban driving. A refreshed truck might be a little more efficient, but don’t expect huge profits.

Hit: Ideal receiver setup

The towing arrangement at the rear of the Silverado is more ideal than the Ford F-150 and it boils down to one thing: the location of the safety chain linkages. The Silverado 1500 safety chain hook is currently installed near the receiver opening, and is easily accessible and horizontally mounted. The F-150 has a hookup mounted about five inches behind the receiver opening, placing it under the bumper.

Miss: Even Chevrolet agrees, safety must be standard

The $3,860 Trailboss LT Premium Plan on my testers added, among a long list of others, rear-traffic alerts and lane change alerts. But the $61,625 truck doesn’t have automatic emergency braking. This is a red flag in our book. Each updated 2022 Silverado model will come standard with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, active lane control and lane departure warning.

The updated Silverado 1500 2022 seems, on paper, to fix many of the current model’s faults. Take notes and be sure to understand which 2022 Silverado 1500 you want, and which one you actually see before signing on the dotted line.
