Traverse vs. Atlas: Space for People and Their Goods

Chevrolet Traverse

Although still classified as a midsize SUV, the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse is one of the largest members in its class. This means plenty of room for seven or eight passengers as well as nearly 100 cubic feet of maximum cargo space.

A 3.6-liter V6 makes over 300 horsepower, which gives the Traverse enough grunt to get around. Front-wheel drive is the basic layout, although all-wheel drive is available for around $2,000 more (depending on trim). With a towing package, Traverse can withdraw 5,000 pounds. We wouldn’t say the Traverse is particularly exciting to drive, but most people don’t buy a 3-row family SUV to take it to the track.

The optional second row captain’s seat reduces passenger capacity to seven. The interior isn’t particularly fresh and eye-catching, but it’s comfortable and equipped with buttons and knobs for controlling climate and audio controls, rather than using the touchscreen for everything.

Standard features include USB ports on all three rows and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Also includes a full suite of safety features as well as GM’s OnStar service.

The top trim adds things like leather upholstery, an upgraded audio system, and a rear-view camera. Adaptive cruise control is also available, but only on higher trims.

Volkswagen Atlas

The Volkswagen Atlas can be made in several different passenger configurations with a six seater, passenger style, with a pair of captain’s seats in the second row, or bench seats in the second row for up to seven seats.

The recently updated front and rear styling gives the Atlas a more handsome and fresh look, and the length is increased by 3 inches. That means a little more interior space for passengers. We also like the standard Atlas safety features, which include a forward collision warning system, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring and rear traffic warning on all models. You can choose to equip your Atlas with all-wheel drive (AWD) instead of standard front-wheel drive (FWD) and expect to get the same EPA combined fuel rating of 22 mpg.

On the road, the Atlas is comfortable and gives drivers and passengers a reassuring view. Since the SUV is built specifically for the American market, interior space is plentiful, and everything is well thought out in terms of ergonomics.

The base engine, a 235-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder, may seem a bit small for a 4,000-pound vehicle, but Atlas makes up for it with strong low-end torque and smart gears. You can also opt for the 276-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 if you want a little more power, but you’ll lose a bit of efficiency.

Passenger capacity is seven or eight people; the base engine puts out about 300 hp.

Advantages of the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse

Either 7 or 8 passengers capacity; strength; cargo capacity; a little more space in the third row.

Advantages of Volkswagen Atlas 2022

Two different engine options.

Which is Right for Me?

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse is a comfortable, family-sized 3-row SUV with plenty of room and lots of power from its V6 engine.

The Volkswagen Atlas 2022 is spacious, handsome and comfortable, with seating for six or seven passengers and AWD is available.
