The Chevrolet Silverado is one of America’s favorite workhorse cars, with more than 12 million sold since its debut in 1998. While buyers can configure the pickup from boneless contractor specs to a well-trimmed office on wheels, one of the characteristics of the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado is not. ‘t has well-documented reliability.
Consumer Reports (CR) has collected a myriad of complaints on the Silverado. The three most common problems that Chevrolet Silverado owners face are as follows.
Electronics in a weak 2021 Chevy Silverado car
With below-average ratings on a variety of systems that drivers and passengers can use, buyers aren’t happy with the Silverado’s in-car electronics. Consumer Reports claims CD or DVD players, radio and media interfaces, speakers, GPS, OnStar communication systems, and various displays will freeze or go completely blank. Additionally, the Bluetooth capabilities, voice control command module, HVAC system, and even the steering button fail to work consistently, as do the backup cameras and various pickup sensors.
The entry on carcomplaints.com also details that the warning light in the gauge cluster may not work and cause the driver to be unaware of problems with the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC). Unfortunately, there is also a problem with the trailer brake light system, which makes it illegal to tow trailers on public roads.
Chevrolet Silverado electrical problems
If the problems with the in-car electronics weren’t enough, buyers also reported failures with the Silverado’s electrical system as a whole. CR claims that the Chevrolet has below-average reliability with—for the most part—everything under the hood.
While the reworked 5.3-liter Silverado V8 has excellent power, electrical malfunctions with the alternator, starter motor, battery link, ignition switch, distributor, spark plugs, and engine wiring harness will keep the truck from moving.
According to an entry on CarComplaints.com, these problems can start within a few hundred miles of leaving the dealership with a new truck. One user detailed that their 2021 Silverado suffered a complete electrical failure on the road at night, even with less than 500 miles, after replacing the entire engine and infotainment system.
Chevrolet Silverado engine problems are very significant
Even worse is the reliability of the Chevy Silverado engine. This is separate from the powertrain electronics and deals with the mechanical components themselves.
A user at CarComplaints.com reported that the engine in his 2021 Chevrolet Silverado started “knocking and lagging” while driving down the road. The dealer reportedly told him he and three other Silverados customers had a “lifter failure.” Another user claimed he had a complete engine failure after just 371 miles.
CR confirms that its respondents have reported being forced to get a complete engine back or replacement following problems with leaks from the cylinder head and malfunctions with the timing belt and chain. GM authorities report that General Motors (GM) announced last year a “Customer Satisfaction Program” for the 2021 select Silverado 1500 and its cousin, the GMC Sierra 1500. The tactic was to replace the eight-speed automatic transmission after persistent complaints about gearshifts from a faulty reaction carrier, which is part of a rotating unit.
2021 Chevrolet Silverado recall
Over the past year and a half, the National Highway Transportation and Safety Board (NHTSA) has made five recalls on the 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500. NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has also launched an investigation into one of those recalls, which may have resulted from a “blind tab.” missing” which prevented the driver’s front airbag from inflating, based on six Silverados crashes, according to carcomplaints.com.
However, NHTSA has also announced recalls for overcured tires that may separate at the belt edges, non-functioning ABS, unsafe seat belt brackets in the front row center seat position, and malfunctioning seat belt assembly. These problems can cause accidents or increase the severity of injuries during accidents.
