The 2022 Chevrolet Equinox gets a refresh this year.

And the Bow Tie brand does well in its best-selling SUV with the customization it provides.

In fact, across Chevy’s lineup of vehicles, sales of the compact sport-ute have been surpassed only by the Silverado.

With that in mind, it makes sense that Chevrolet would pay extra special attention to the 5-seat Equinox and its upgrades.

So let’s break it down in detail in this review, starting with the top 3 things that have made this compact crossover so popular.

What’s New For The 2022 Chevy Equinox SUV

At first glance, the ’22 Equinox is noticeably updated with updated front and rear fascia.

Oftentimes this is an area automakers focus on for updates, but Chevy designers get credit for this one. Because it takes a more thorough examination to determine whether the vehicle is completely new or just tidied up.

Chevrolet is also advertising its popular RS offering to the Equinox trim line for 2022. That’s Rally Sport for the uninitiated. And as the name suggests, it provides a sportier look among other upgrades.

Additionally, the bow tie brand added several new exterior colors for the ’22. Includes Cherry Red Tintcoat, Iron Gray Metallic, Seaglas Blue Metallic, and Blue Glow Metallic – some for an additional fee.

Finally, there are some new technologies available in the ’22 Equinox. And it includes available automatic parking assist and front and rear parking assist along with adjustable heated outside mirrors.

But a favorite tech upgrade that most road warriors will appreciate is the addition of Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay capabilities.

Engine, Transmission and MPG

There’s little news about the engine or 2022. And that’s how your engine choice just got easier. Because Chevy only offers one this year.

Machine

However, it’s an enthusiastic 1.5-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder Ecotec engine. Plus the power plant produces 170 horsepower with 203 pound-feet of torque.

Transmission

Likewise, there is a single transmission option, but with a two- or all-wheel drive decision to be made.

So the trans is a six-speed automatic. It pairs well with the bike and keeps the riding experience confident and enjoyable.

And the Equinox is more of a crossover than an SUV. This is evidenced in the transmission area with the choice of two-wheel drive to drive the front wheels rather than power from the rear wheels.

Fuel Economy

As expected, with the only difference being FWD and AWD, the estimated fuel economy is quite similar.

Specifically, FWD will give you 26 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. While AWD is estimated to produce 25 mpg in the city and 30 on the open road.

What Does a ’22 Chevy Equinox Look Like?

With this refresh, the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox definitely looks sportier. But it also looks a little wider and bolder.

And this brings the overall style of the compact SUV more in line with the looks of its brethren. In particular, the Trailblazer and Blazer have both returned to the Chevy lineup in recent years.

And upon their return, they both brought the sleeker and sportier look that the 2022 Equinox represents.

The curb weight of the ’22 Equinox varies depending on trim and drivetrain. But the range is 3,274 to 3,512 lbs.

Plus, if you need to drag anything behind you, the Bow Tie compact offers a 1,500 lb towing capacity.

Inside the 5-seat Chevy Equinox is spacious, well laid out and moreover very functional.

I like the legroom in the front and back seats. Plus, those back seats are nearly flat when you want to haul more cargo than people.

Also, it’s easy to switch from the back seat down, or only partially down, and backwards for the person carrying.

But the cockpit is where the Equinox really shines. Even though Chevy has an advantage in this design field.

Being part of the General Motors Family, Chevrolet draws design influences from more than just the name of its own brand team. Equinox shares many things directly with GMC Terrain and Buick Envision.

And when it comes to the cargo area, the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox offers 29.9 cubic feet behind the rear seats.

Also, with the rear seats folded down, it jumps up to 63.9 cu-ft.

Technology, Infotainment and Security

When it comes to infotainment technology in the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox – I’m a big fan of the user interface.

For the driver, all vehicle, climate and infotainment controls are easy to use. Plus, they’re easy to learn to use for drivers making their first laps behind the wheel of the Equinox.

Perhaps even better are the safety stats of this compact SUV. For example, the National High Transportation Safety Administration gave the 2022 Equinox the highest rating with a 5-star safety rating. And that includes both FWD and AWD options.

3. Outback – It’s compact, not bulky. But it’s well laid out. Quality touch and function and very useful for transporting people and/or goods.
