Ford’s off-road SUV expertise dates back to World War II, when the automaker was part of a government competition to build a rugged carry-all utility for GIs on the battlefield. Ford’s entry was called GP, with the company building more than 270,000 of these “general purpose” vehicles for Allied forces. Returning GIs bought surplus Army GPs for work and play, but they were too small and inconvenient for civilian life, according to Ford research from the early 1960s, so Ford developed a more refined, spacious, yet durable off-road vehicle. long to fulfill this need – Bronco.

The original Bronco was nicknamed the GOAT by Donald Frey, the Ford president who championed the good name of the Mustang and Bronco and challenged the engineering team to provide “easy roads anywhere”. An agile, sports-oriented 4×4 off-road car, Ford dubbed the original 1966 Bronco a “completely new line of sports vehicles” on its August 11, 1965 reveal – the first reference to an American manufacturer’s “SUV”.

Early Broncos had a rugged body-on-frame design with short front and rear overhangs, high ground clearance and a short wheelbase for maximum off-road capability. The Bronco’s toughness and agility at high speeds allowed the likes of Rod Hall and Larry Minor to overall victory in the grueling 1969 Baja 1000 – a win that no other production 4×4 has replicated in 50 years.
