I first saw the Corvette on my first trip to the US. I’m a car-crazy 16 year old and it was the third-generation long-lived Coke bottle Corvette that was on the market from 1968 to 1982. Needless to say, I fell in love.
Over the years, I have been fascinated by every new Corvette that appears on the glossy pages Roads & Tracks, Car and Driver and Motorcycle Trends—from the 1984 C4 Corvette, to the 1995 C5 to the 2005 C6. But that won’t be until 2018—a full 36 years after I first saw the Corvette in (fiberglass) form—when I would find myself behind one wheel. And it’s a truly awesome version of the C7 (2014-2019). Not only that, the drive is held at the Spring Mountain Raceway in Las Vegas. Needless to say, I was blown away.
And now, Chevrolet Philippines has presented the latest version of the game-changing and genre-changing American sports car—the sensational mid-engined C8 Corvette Stingray (a first). This is a Corvette that is nothing short of a quantum leap in technology, design, craftsmanship, luxury and, of course, performance
The exterior of the 2022 Corvette Stingray Coupe has bold, futuristic Italian proportions and I dare say, but still a Corvette. It is lean and muscular, with an athletic sculptural shape that conveys a sense of movement and power from every angle.
The level of supercar craftsmanship, premium materials and attention to detail were essential in bringing the 2022 Corvette together. The new engine location was really a focal point for the car’s design. This is the heart of this American supercar, and it’s like a jewel in a display case, visible through the large rear hatch like in a very expensive Italian exotic.
The fighter-inspired cab features a cockpit that not only migrates forward by 16.5 inches but also envelops the driver, delivering a high performance and aeronautical theme, vertical climate control and ultra-thin vents that minimize instrument panel height to create a comfortable atmosphere. . a low, roomy interior, and a new, square, two-spoke, small-diameter steering wheel that allows unobstructed views of the adjustable 12-inch instrument cluster display.
Premium interior materials crafted with quality and craftsmanship featuring hand-wrapped, cut-and-sew leather components with bold stitching, abundant use of real metal, stainless steel speaker grille with Bose Performance Series audio system, and carbon fiber trim in a GT2 bucket type seat.
The Corvette C8 comes in five exterior colors: Torch Red, Arctic White, Ceramic Matrix Gray Metallic, Silver Flare Metallic, Hypersonic Gray Metallic, and an Adrenaline Red/Jet Black interior combination.
The structure of the Corvette is built around its backbone: the central tunnel. This allows the lightweight and rigid structure to serve as the foundation for the suspension system to work optimally. Corvette will provide the best driving comfort coupled with outstanding cornering ability.
The center tunnel design offers many advantages, including easier entry/exit for mid-engine vehicles (no wide rocker panels), preservation of the beloved Corvette standard removable roof panel, which can be easily stored in the rear trunk, front storage compartment that can fits airline-only carry bags and laptop bags, and smart packaging with enhanced cabin comfort, including an extra inch of rear seat travel and nearly double the backrest angle.
The all-new 2022 Corvette Stingray Coupe is built with an intelligent blending strategy, enabling key features such as a strong, rigid and lightweight main structure from six high-pressure diecast aluminum sections (which minimize the number of joints in the vehicle, making the structure more rigid. which aids in handling and track cornering), the industry’s first carbon fiber curved rear bumper beam for weight reduction, and the front and rear trunk and dashboard are molded from ultra-lightweight “floats” derived from fiberglass and a proprietary resin. The material is so light that it literally floats in water. It works with other fiberglass and carbon fiber variants to lower mass and reduce noise and vibration.
Helping the 2022 Corvette deliver superior road ride comfort and balanced handling on the track are coil dampers that create entirely new ride and handling characteristics. The mid-engine architecture allows for a short, straight and rigid steering system, coupled with an updated electronic steering system, making driver chassis input instantaneous.
The new seating position places the car’s center of gravity close to the driver’s inner hips, so the car actually rotates around the driver. This completely changes the perception of vehicle handling and responsiveness.
Other driving and handling tricks include more precise and adjustable eBoost brakes, Michelin all-season performance tires that can help the car grip the asphalt by almost 1G, front suspension lift which increases ground clearance by about 40mm in the front bumper in 2.8 seconds, protecting against impact. , potholes and steep inlets (can operate at speeds of up to 40 km/h and are programmed to work automatically via GPS to remember up to 1,000 locations), launch control assisted by rear weight distribution, allowing the new Stingray to get off track faster than any Corvette in history, and piece de resistanceThe acclaimed Z51 Performance Package, which introduces a number of new technologies to the 2022 Corvette Stingray Coupe such as performance suspension with manually adjustable threaded seat springs, larger brake rotors with the Z51 logo on the calipers, specific axle ratios, front brake cooling inlets, performance exhaust, electronic limited-slip differential, front splitter and two-part open rear spoiler that add up to a combined 400 pounds of downforce, available Magnetic Ride Control 4.0 which reads better roads, provides more precise data via a suspension-mounted accelerometer, and available Management Performance Traction.
Powering the new Corvette is Chevy’s next-generation 6.2-liter dry-sump small-block LT2 V8, the only naturally aspirated V8 in the segment. When equipped with a performance exhaust, it will produce 474hp and 613Nm of torque — the most horsepower and torque for any entry Corvette.
The world-beating LT2 is paired with Chevrolet’s first 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, which delivers lightning-fast shifting. This transmission is uniquely designed with TREMEC to provide the best of both worlds: the feel of a manual connected directly to the passion and premium ride comfort of the automatic. The dual paddle de-clutch feature even allows the driver to release the clutch by holding both paddles for more manual control.
Engineers set the DCT in a very low first gear for an additional boost of traction to get the car off the track quickly, and a close ratio gear of 2 to 6 kept the engine near peak power on track. The high seventh and eighth gears facilitate long-distance cruising with low engine speed and excellent fuel economy.
The DCT is mated to the new Electronic Transmission Range Selector. There is no mechanical interface between the shift lever and the transmission. The Corvette electric shifter incorporates two pull-down switches for Reverse and Ride and a push-button for Parking, Neutral and Low/Manual.
The choice of driver modes has been expanded from four to six, allowing drivers to customize the feel of their Corvette to their personal preferences. Weather, Tour, Sport, and Track modes remain, and there are two new modes: MyMode, a configurable setting for a preferred driving style that can stay between main cycles; and the Z mode, named after the famous Corvette Z06, ZR1, and Z51 performance packages, which is activated via the “Z” button on the steering wheel. This is a one-off mode that takes MyMode configuration a step further, allowing the driver to customize the engine and transmission as well.
For those who enjoy daily commutes, the industry-leading Performance Data Recorder is an advanced driving analysis tool enhanced with a high-definition resolution camera and a new in-vehicle user interface. Customers can record circuit paths and point-to-point paths. The PDR can be set to auto record like a dashboard camera that starts recording every time the Corvette is running or configured to only start when the car is set to Valet mode (to monitor how valet parking attendants handle your car).
The Corvette has always represented iconic American design, performance, technical ingenuity and achievement. The standard retail price of the 2022 Stingray is 9,915,888 and is available via indent order through any Chevrolet dealer. Like every Corvette before it, the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is manufactured at GM’s Bowling Green, Kentucky plant.
The Corvette comes with a 5 year warranty, automatic registration to 24/7 Chevrolet Roadside Assistance for 3 years, and direct access to the 24/7 Chevy Hotline for convenient service and vehicle ownership needs.
