Ross Chastain Press Conference Transcript

COME TO DOVER, FIRST LAPS, NEW CARS, JUST WHAT’S ON YOUR MIND WHEN YOU ARE READY TO TRAINING AND QUALIFY HERE?

“Nerve. This place is intimidating. Walking across the pedestrian bridge is a good reminder of how tough this place is, especially with this new car. I’m nervous. That’s how I feel right now. I feel ready, but just the unknown that has the potential to be very unstable behind the wheel with the setup.”

I TALKED TO JUSTIN MARKS, YOUR BOSS, LAST WEEK. SHE SAYS THE FIRST JOB SHE HAD WAS TO ASSURE YOU THAT YOU DON’T RACE FOR YOUR JOB AGAIN, THAT YOU ARE SAFE AND YOU DON’T NEED TO WORRY ABOUT ANY LAP BEING YOUR LAST. HE SAYS HE THINKS HE HAS BEEN MAKING PROGRESS THERE. HE SAYS HER NEXT JOB IS TO CONFIRM YOU THAT YOU ARE THE ELITE DRIVER IN THIS SERIES AND WILL BE RUNNING AHEAD STARTING NOW. HOW FAR IN THE PROCESS IS HE?

“I heard the interview and I realized some of the things I said or really what I thought didn’t come across as the most confident build. I’m coming in here as a person who will be here all week and the last time I sat here was with the Delaware Office of Highway Safety and the Buckle Up, Protect your Melon campaign. That’s the kind of thinking I have running here. Been here all week, as Delaware people think I live here. I’m going to be here for the state show, I’m going to be here for the week leading up to the race and it’s not just a normal NASCAR schedule. I’ll be honest, there’s a lot more work to be done and when I’m pulling on the track I still feel like I’m the same person who was in Johnny’s (Davis) four cars and this weekend funded most of our season with just that sponsor. . I would say that there is still a lot of work to be done and Justin (Marks) helped me with that. The group I have around me helps me with that and it’s not something that will be fixed overnight. I do not know that it should be. I think keeping some of that natural feeling that every part of this is really cool. I know I should expect something, but also, it’s okay not to expect everything too. ”

IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BECOME A TWICE WINNER VS BECOME A ONE TIME WINNER?

“Oh yeah (laughs). Everything. It’s twice as sweet, right? That is the expression we use. It was incredible that Talladega was not expected. COTA, yes, we feel we have a good car, and we did everything right. Going wild at the end, but our Talladega took the white flag, and I unwrapped my thumb from the wheel ready to crash. Just lift your thumb and it’s ready to hit the wall or retreat in the grass. The unexpected caught me off guard and a lot of us caught our breath, but winning the Cup Series I don’t know now when the last one was and a month ago I don’t know if I would have won. Crazy doesn’t stop with two wins. We came to Dover and put ourselves in a position to do it again.”

WHAT, IF ANYTHING, WHAT ARE YOU DOING OR NOTING THAT YOU DO BEHIND THE WHEEL MAY BE DIFFERENT THIS YEAR WITH THE EQUIPMENT YOU GET THAN WHAT YOU FEEL AT OTHER TIMES IN YOUR CAREER?

“Driving this car is completely different. I mean, I have to relearn a lot of things. I mean it comes down to shifting and how the sequence works versus the H pattern. The only things that are the same for me in the car are my seat, my bucket, my insert, and my steering wheel. Literally, everything else is different. So, all inputs are different. Everything the car tells me comes through different ways. The chassis is completely different. It’s just that everything about my driving is evolving. It’s always evolving as a race car driver. Every race car evolves every lap on the track and for me, I’ve never run a perfect lap, and I don’t think I’ll ever do it. I will continue to work as closely as possible to it. It’s evolving and this car I don’t know what it needs, but I know that I’m not driving the car I used to be. I didn’t expect to go here at Dover and it was different.”

ROSS, YOU GET A PITBULL IN THE CAR THIS WEEK. KNOW HOW MUCH MORE PRESSURE IS THERE FOR PERFORMANCE WITH YOUR BOSS IN THE CAR?

“Mr. All over the world. From the outside I saw Trackhouse last year and knew Justin (Marks) but knew nothing more about him. To be fully involved in it and to have a call with Armando (Pitbull) was wild. I mean he had a lot going on in his life, in his career, and his touring. He loved NASCAR. He loved what Trackhouse did and how he was able to unite his fan base with ours and there was a lot of overlapping. There was also a lot of overlap that wasn’t even known people. Fans on both sides of him or us, we share a lot of things in common. Now, with this Can’t Stop Us Now tour it’s going to help bring all of this together. It’s going to be really in line with a lot of racing markets and people can see both sides. Memaw I want to go to concerts every time I come to Estero, Florida, like in Ft. Myers. He’s with me this week like I want to go. I gotta give them a few tickets t or something. Year-end in October, he called me like I saw this on Facebook, and I wanted to go. That’s a perfect example my grandma doesn’t even know one of the songs and I’m asking here if you’re sure. He’s like he’s not, but he’s your owner and I want to support him, and I want to learn about him. Now, we’ll see after the concert what our thoughts are, but he’s about to go experience it. I think it’s amazing and if you’ve been to any of his concerts the music is one thing but to me between his songs, his message and his delivery of motivation and the way he excites the crowd, but then revolves around how great this country is and the message he has have it for tens of thousands of people it just makes you want to run through a brick wall. Having him in the car makes me want to go fight Miles the Monster. You want to do good.”

YOUR TWO WIN THIS YEAR HAS COME WITH THE LAST LAP PASS. HOW IMPORTANT TO STAY AT THE END AND KEEP CONFIDENCE?

“Two years ago, I didn’t win any of those races, because I made aggressive moves and cycled alone in Talladega back to 15th.th or in my COTA the wheel jumps and goes off the track or bumps into someone or spins on its own. Two years ago, driving 10 cars in Xfinity and I didn’t win any of those races. It’s all about being there in the end. There were chances in both races to knock ourselves out and it didn’t happen. Now there is another race this year where a small mistake means we don’t win and we have the same chance. I am not perfect. I am human. There were mistakes and we had a great start to the season and the stats look good, but there were mistakes there which I also learned from this year. Continuing to grow is difficult. I mean this is the best race car group in the world, in my opinion. Every mistake and they exploit it.”

YOU SAID LAST WEEK THAT YOUR WATERMELON WAS ON THE LAST LEGS, RIGHT? HOW MUCH DO YOU HAVE THIS WEEK AND DO YOU GO TO GROUP SHOPS AND ARE YOU FEELING ONE FOR THE PERFECT MONTH? IS ANYONE BETTER THAN OTHER?

“Well that was it. The one we managed to fail at Talladega which we bought a week after COTA. It was the last one, we knew we saw it. Roy, our truck driver, got it; he and his wife go out and it’s tough sometimes but there’s watermelon in the shop all year round now. That’s the great thing about America and today’s agriculture, no matter where you live, no watermelon was grown and harvested in Alabama last week, but there were watermelons in the grocery store. That’s not always the case. Some of us in the room probably remember those days, long ago. That’s an old joke (laughs), I’m sorry. Roy learned to pick a good one and it’s three easy things; look, lift and twist. You see it, it has to be symmetrical. Lift it, it has to be heavy for its weight. They’re 92 percent water and the bottom should be yellow. He’s done a great job, but it’s a bit of an exact science and I hope that soon we’ll have better ways to have the product ya ng better. We are working on that.”

“We have one in the carrier. It was more of the motivational part and that’s what we broke. They took that one out. Another time, my father brought two from our farm. We harvest watermelons from south Florida, Florida. Our farm is actively harvesting now, so he has two. He took his motorbike upstairs and owned it. We ended up not even catching them. He sent one home with a friend, and we ate one after the race. We don’t even destroy it, we just chop it up. We won the Xfinity race at Daytona a few years ago, I think we might have missed 30. I mean, the whole night after that race just smashed them all over the pitch with people. I try, if we have extra, let someone else spoil it because it’s cool. Everyone knows what it means. That means we win. Sunday night, just before Monday morning, there was a video of some of my friends opening one that I had just watched. That’s really cool.”
