If you’re in the market for a new car, the choices may seem confusing, but it often boils down to a simple decision: follow the herd, or stand out from the crowd. Do you lead, or do you follow? With the arrival of the new Ford Mustang Mach-E sports car (SUV), true leaders can now show the same foresight in their car choices as they do in everything else.
In less than nine years, the sale of new cars running on fossil fuels will be banned in the UK. Now, more than ever, is the perfect time to use electricity. And with its impressive range, sporting heritage, and stunning good looks, the Mustang Mach-E is the perfect car to do just that.
What’s more, if you opt for a company car, electric vehicles are subject to an in-kind benefit rate of just 1 per cent† in the current UK tax year, compared to 27 per cent for higher emission vehicles. And if you drive regularly to London, using electricity isn’t a big deal. From October this year, only electric or hydrogen powered vehicles will be exempt from the £15 daily congestion charge. For weekday drivers, that’s more than £3,500 in your pocket every year.
The Mustang Mach-E was a reasonable choice on paper, and a brilliant choice on asphalt. Here are six reasons:
The Mustang is an American icon. Ford designers have taken the key features that make the iconic car so special and redefine them in this sleek all-electric SUV, down to the “tri-bar” design of the taillights. The “shark” nose and long hood evoke the Mustang name’s sporting heritage, as does the coupé’s deceptive roofline. This is a very clever piece of visual magic. Coloring the raised roof black retains the lines of the car, while increasing the interior headroom for rear passengers – the car can seat three people comfortably.
The Mustang Mach-E connected very well, equipped with a 4G wireless modem to allow for over-the-air software updates. An elegant high-definition digital instrument cluster shows the car’s range, speed and vehicle health, to keep the driver’s focus on the road ahead. Keyless entry is standard: the car recognizes your approach and unlocks the door, which then opens at the push of a button. At the heart of the car’s entertainment and information systems is the new Ford SYNC 4A system, currently exclusive to the Mustang Mach-E. The SYNC 4A features advanced route planning and speech recognition – tell him you’re hungry, and he’ll find the nearest place to eat. It can also personalize each driver’s settings, so that when you’re driving, the car’s display and entertainment instantly reflect your preferences. SYNC 4A communicates with Android and Apple smartphones, and the FordPass app lets you plan a route on your phone and then sync it wirelessly to your car.
Since the Mustang Mach-E is electric, the response is immediate, and all the motor torque is instantly available. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels (in the two-wheel drive model), or to all four wheels via two electric motors in the four-wheel drive model. In the final configuration, the Mustang Mach-E can accelerate to 62mph in 5.1 seconds‡. What’s more, the Mustang Mach-E can cover up to 379 miles between charges* – more than most people in the UK drive in a week. For charging away from home, the FordPass app offers access to the high-speed IONITY network, where you can add more than 70 miles of range in just 10 minutes**. This app lets you let your car charge while enjoying your coffee break. It will send you a message when Mach-E is ready to use.
Practical and comfortable interior
The Mustang Mach-E’s cabin is indeed a great place to be, with comfortable and supportive seats in hand-stitched vegan leather. The absence of a transmission tunnel means the rear seats can comfortably accommodate three adults, while the sound in the car comes from a unique system designed by Bang & Olufsen (long-range battery vehicles only). All these conveniences come without compromising on storage space. The boot has a capacity of 402 liters, and with the rear seats folded this increases to 1,420 liters for your luggage. There’s even extra space under the hood, where you’ll find the engine in a fossil-fueled car. In the waterproof compartment here you can store the included charging cable or your muddy walking boots. There’s plenty of interior storage space too – and a handy shelf for phones that support wireless charging.
Improved safety and security
Nothing bothers the Mustang Mach-E, not even the driver who forgets his car keys. Using the keyless entry option, the driver can unlock the car by tapping the numeric code on the touch sensitive pad attached to the driver’s door. On the road, Co-Pilot 360 is a driver assistance system that features speed sign recognition, lane-keeping technology and adaptive cruise control with Stop-and-Go. This highly sophisticated system is designed to help safe drivers stay safe. It can also maintain a certain distance from the vehicle in front, and even stop the car in traffic.
The joy of driving
Whether you’re driving for business, family or for the pure pleasure of being behind the wheel, the Mustang Mach-E has driving modes to suit. Active mode is the perfect choice for everyday driving, delivering a mix of electric quietness and Mustang signature performance. Steering, electronic stability control and throttle are balanced for a comfortable and satisfying ride. For more excitement, switch to Wild mode. Here’s the Mustang Mach-E unveiled, with sharper steering, improved throttle response and improved regenerative braking. Matching the performance is the enhanced interior propulsion sound and – in the four-wheel drive model – sporty orange lighting. Whisper mode is a quieter experience, with lighter steering and smoother accelerator response, for a more relaxed ride. The Mustang Mach-E also offers an innovative one-pedal drive system, using only the accelerator pedal. When you release the pedal, the car slows down, and uses the power generated by the brakes to charge the car’s battery.
