Ford managed to sell 4,135 Rangers in October 2021 to become the best-selling vehicle in Australia although sales fell 1.9 percent compared with the previous year, new Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries data shows.

The first all-new Ranger since 2011 was launched online on November 24 and will be the basis of the next Volkswagen Amarok.

A teaser image of the disguised prototype, released ahead of that launch, has hinted that the next Ranger will stylistically resemble the new super-sized American Ford F150 pick-up truck with tough-looking headlights.

Global supply issues are affecting Toyota heavily, with the HiLux last month being pushed into second place with 3,961 leaving showrooms, marking a 10.9 percent decline.

The Toyota HiLux has been Australia’s best-selling car, on the annual sales chart, since 2016 with Ranger only shifting it for the No. monthly position. 1 in September 2017, September 2020, June 2021, September 2021, and October 2021.

Ranger outperformed the HiLux in July 2020 and August 2020 when the Toyota RAV4 became the best-selling.

While Australia’s auto market began to recover in late 2020, last month’s overall sales tally of 74,650 new vehicles was 8.1 percent weaker than a year earlier.

Covid’s worldwide production restrictions and semiconductor shortages have led to international supply shortages.

Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries chief executive Tony Weber said customers should be prepared for delays.

“Automotive manufacturers like all those in the global manufacturing sector are facing a shortage of microprocessors leading to longer waiting times to get products to market,” he said.

The outgoing Ranger became the basis of the old Mazda BT-50, with the new model now based on the Isuzu D-MAX.

For the first time since the 1970s, Ford and Mazda will not share a platform for their volume sales.

The current form of the HiLux has been around since 2015 and a facelift in 2020.

The Ranger has managed to stay fresh, despite its decade-old form, with the addition of the more luxurious FX4 and Raptor models with more powerful bi-turbo engines and FOX Racing Shocks.

The next Ranger will arrive at dealerships in 2022 with XL, XLS, XLT and Wildtrak volume-selling variants of the new model expected to go on sale first in the new form.

While the Ranger is made in Thailand, it was developed in Australia, although local production was completed in 2016 when the last Falcon was made.

Ford at Geelong invented the ute in 1934.

The next Ranger will arrive in dealerships next year with the more common XL, XLS and XLT variants of the new model which are expected to go on sale first in the new form.
