Performance packages are often accompanied by fanfare and fanfare, especially when it comes to tuned SUVs. An SUV already makes a statement about your lifestyle aspirations, so naturally, the high-horsepower usually isn’t shy about upping the braggadocio. Back in 1992, when GMC put a 280-hp turbocharged V-6 in the S-15 Jimmy, they didn’t just waste it on outrageous graphics and aero cladding—they named it the Typhoon. When Dodge installed a 475-hp V-8 on the Durango, it also had a hood scoop, racing stripes, and exhaust that could be heard from police helicopters that might be chasing it. But the Stealth Performance package for the 2022 Ford Expedition Limited is different, as the name implies. Aside from the red brake calipers, the resulting vehicle is actually smoother than the rest of the Limited range. Trim is off and power is on, resulting in what may be the most sneaky drag racer on the market. With twin turbos huffing boost to the high-output 3.5-liter V-6, the Stealth Performance vehicle hits 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and clears the quarter mile in 13.7 seconds at 101 mph. Try that after running through the Dairy Queen drive-through and you’ll wipe the Blizzards out of the back window.
To get this fastest Expedition, you’ll need to order the Limited (either rear or four wheel drive, regular wheelbase or Max) and add the 304A equipment group, aka the Stealth Performance package, for an additional $9880. That brings an additional 40 horsepower and 30 lb-ft of torque. Don’t be tempted by the 303A gear group, which costs $4670 and is just Stealth without Performance. What’s the point of being stealthy if there’s nothing to hide?

In addition to the high output V-6 (440 horsepower, 510 lb-ft of torque) and dual exhaust, the Stealth Performance package features a sport-tuned suspension, 3.73:1 final-drive ratio, six-spoke 22 painted black. -inch wheels, and distinctly unobtrusive red brake calipers. It also gets plenty of black trim (grill, roof rails, usable walking boards, headlight bezels) and a 22-speaker B&O sound system. Surprisingly for a model positioned at the pinnacle of the lineup’s performance, there is some key hardware that remains optional. We’re saying you’d better go all the way and add an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential for $1500, only available for four fours.
Despite the promise of “sports tuned suspension”, the Stealth Performance remains a palace of pleasure to be comfortable and to ride as such. While the powerful twin-turbo V-6 can camouflage our 5837 pound Expedition, you feel that weight in corners, where the big Ford can only manage 0.75 g of lateral grip. It’s not a Porsche Macan, but that figure is at least better than the 0.69 g we recorded from the Cadillac Escalade-V 2023, which has much more revealing sporting pretensions. The Mien The Stealth Performance is similar to a big old Bentley, something like the Mulsanne that can fire afterburners for the on-ramp but wants to rest on the door handle when the off-ramp arrives. And the Expedition is equally quiet on the road, with an interior sound level of 68 decibels at 70 mph and just 74 decibels at wide open throttle. These hot rods may have dual exhausts, but not the kind to annoy neighbors.

FoMoCo fans may have noted that the Performance Stealth appears to have borrowed the Lincoln Navigator engine, and they were right—it’s the same powertrain that propelled our latest test Navigator to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. And at $78,070 for the standard rear-wheel drive model and $80,620 for the four-by-four, the Expedition Limited Stealth Performance can overlap the Navigator’s price as well. Thankfully, Stealth Performance buyers can’t really go any higher as the Limited is already equipped with most of the Expedition options available: heated steering wheel, heated second row seats. And yes, the Expedition’s black leather seats with red stitching look sharp, but have you seen the Navigator’s interior?
Then again, we think the Stealth Performance Expedition appeals to a different audience. Navigators are all bombastic, chrome and flash. Meanwhile, Performance Stealth doesn’t even wear any badge identifying it. But if you see the Expedition Limited with its red brake calipers winding down to traffic lights like a Christmas tree on the local quarter-mile track, maybe think twice before getting into an impromptu drag race. While another Expedition might also load eight passengers and tow £9,300, only this one can make the EcoBoost Mustang a run for their money.
