I drive two awesome electric SUVs from Hyundai and Ford.
I would buy the Hyundai Ioniq 5 because of its funky looks, great interior, and super fast charging capabilities.
The Ioniq 5 I tested made $56,000. The 2021 Mach-E Mustang I drove costs $58,300.
Driven by soaring gas prices and cheaper options, more drivers are considering electric cars than ever before.
But deciding on a model can be difficult for buyers who haven’t thought about battery, mileage, charging or front trunk before.
I tested two of the most attractive battery-powered SUVs currently on sale — the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 — to see which one was the better choice. This is why I chose Hyundai over Ford:
Which is cheaper?
The Ioniq 5 is a more budget-friendly SUV, but not by much. The base 2022 Mustang Mach-E Select starts at $43,895 before dealer fees and markups. The Ioniq 5 SE Standard range costs $39,950 and up.
Prices for both can top $60,000 when loaded with all-wheel drive, larger battery packs, and luxury options. Both qualify for a $7,500 federal tax credit for electric car purchases, unlike Tesla or General Motors products.
Which has more reach?
I’m well. Both SUVs offer a range of over 300 miles in select trims, beating out rivals and bringing peace of mind on longer trips.
The Mach-E is rated to travel up to 314 miles in its furthest trim. For the Ioniq 5, it’s 303.
How fast do they charge?
Here Hyundai has a clear advantage. The Ioniq 5 can take full advantage of the most powerful charging station available (350 kilowatt plug) to charge it from 10-80% in just 18 minutes, according to Hyundai. On longer trips, such ultra-fast charging can make all the difference, but keep in mind that super-powered chargers are still a rarity.
The Mach-E achieved the same feat in 45 minutes, according to Ford. It charges at a lower peak rate of 150 kilowatts.
Which one has the better interior?
Both interiors are sleek and minimalistic, featuring a touch screen technology that is responsive to touch and easy to use.
But I found the Ioniq 5 cabin more pleasant to spend time in. It’s incredibly simple and uncluttered, making it feel more spacious than you’d expect from a compact SUV.
Some of the coolest parts of the Ioniq 5’s interior are the sliding center console and the completely flat floor. There’s even a large open space near the driver’s feet for a bag or backpack.
How about appearance?
Both are embracing their electric nature and looking for a very futuristic and eye-catching look. The traditional Mustang style is seen through the Mach-E badge, taillights and grille area.
But the squat proportions and vibe of the Ioniq 5 spacecraft give it a win in my book. The headlights and taillights are made up of hundreds of tiny pixels, which are too cool to ignore.
How does storage stack up?
Each SUV offers a similar-sized cargo area which is enough for a couple or small family, but not too big.
The highlight of the Mach-E’s arms is the front trunk, which adds enough space to carry luggage or some groceries. The Ioniq 5 has a compartment under the hood which is small, but doesn’t hold much.
How do they drive?
On the road, both EVs are smooth, quiet and offer fast acceleration when equipped with all-wheel drive. While the Ioniq 5 is very comfortable, the Mach-E definitely has a more sporty and agile ride feel. After all, it should live up to the Mustang’s name.
Which SUV should you buy?
You really can’t go wrong. Both Ford and Hyundai look great, starting at or around $40,000, and offering a healthy driving range.
If someone were to give me a pile of money and force me to choose, I’d choose the Hyundai for its relaxing interior, blazing fast charging speed, and funky design.
