Will Power Puts Chevy on Pole at Weathertech Laguna Seca Raceway With Historic Run

WILL POWER, NO. 12 VERIZON 5G TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET, POLE WINNER:

CAN YOU STEP AWAY TO HAVE WHAT YOU ACHIEVED TODAY?

“What a milestone. Being up there with an iconic man like Mario is awesome. When I think about the era in which he raced, how dangerous it was and how risky it was, it just strikes me that I was there with Mario. It’s great to have Mario here. Someone I respect a lot and was a huge fan of growing up. I’d like to swap helmets with him, put him in my collection if he wants to.”

WHAT MAKES YOU THIS YEAR TO WIN ALL THE POLES TO GET THIS MOMENT?

“Really focused on certain races that we know we have a good chance of taking pole.”

NOW THE FOCUS CHANGES TOWARDS TOMORROW. WHAT’S THOUGHT?

“We put ourselves in a good position to lead the first lap to get a point and hopefully lead the most laps to get more points. Competitors with better tires but we have track position for now, so we will think about it well. tonight and see how we attack that one. But it will be a long day. I will do my best.”

Mario Andretti, who holds the record with 67 poles:

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THIS PERSON?

“It’s amazing. I know how much I love qualifying and I can see that it’s the same. It’s just trying to get to it and trying to do laps that you can’t repeat and that’s what puts you in pole position.”

DID YOU KNOW THAT THIS MOMENT WILL FINALLY COME?

“Of course. It’s good for the draw, great for the sport. Records are made to be broken. It’s with a good man. Will Power throughout his career has been a very good qualifier. He deserved it. He worked for it and he is the best when it comes to qualifying. .”

WHAT REQUIRES DRIVERS IN QUALIFICATION?

“How badly do you want it? If I had a custom formula, I would pack it up and sell it. It’s just a matter of very big will and only doing the rounds you know you can’t repeat. That’s how records are made. .”

CALLUM ILOTT, NO. 77 JUNCOS HOLLINGER RACING CHEVROLET, QUALIFICATION 2ND

“It shows what we can do with what we have in a certain way. I mean, we started the season with two and a half sets of dampers and one of them was for the oval. We’re done with, I think, three and a half, and they’re not much different from the first. We just bought another version of the first set and adapted it a bit.

Our development requirements this year are what we have to start with, and again, just perfect them. Whether it’s me and driving and experience, we’ve just been cutting and trying to do a good job with it, and yes, it’s tough, especially without teammates who have something to use really well, learn from. To get to this stage and get a result like this, I think they are all very happy, and yes, a great job.

In the end even though it was only one lap at the end it was great to do it, finish it like this, and I think it gave us more motivation in the off-season when they got time to really digest it all. and work on it.

PATO O’WARD, MO.5 ARROW MCLAREN SP CHEVROLET, QUALIFY 6TH:

“It was a good day for us. We went into Firestone Fast Six and then made the wrong tire choice and just used the wrong tire to do that run, which put us P6, but that’s not a bad position to start tomorrow. It’s a tire degradation race. Track position is important. It will be interesting to see who chooses three stoppers or four stoppers, and we will let it tear from there.”

SCOTT MCLAUGHLIN, NO. 3 XPEL TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET, QUALIFICATION 8TH:

Y’all HAVE FAST CARS, WHAT HAPPENED THERE AT TURN FOUR SCOTT?

“Yeah, trying a little hard. We lost our balance all weekend at the Xpel Chevy and unfortunately we made very few mistakes there. Just trying to find the limits and gain confidence in this car. I’m really proud of the guys because we didn’t train and they really rocked this one and gave us a great car. They did a great job and I think we have something to play for tomorrow. We have a few tires up our sleeves and we are in a decent starting place.”

HOW MUCH OF YOUR FOCUS TOMORROW WILL TRY TO FINISH A SECOND POINT AS A HELP TO HELP WILL POWER OR JOSEF NEWGARDEN WIN THE TITLE?

“Listen, we all drive for Team Penske. When the team wins, we win. We will do what we need to do to get the best results for the team. Is it Will (Power) winning the championship or us trying to get 1-2-3 or 1-2. We will do what we need to do. I am very happy with this organization and proud to have signed and proud to represent all of these partners and we just want to do a good job for all of them.”

FELIX ROSENQIST, NO. 7 ARROWS MCLAREN SP CHEVROLET. QUALIFICATION 9TH:

“In Round 1, Group 2, we did a 71.3 second lap and tried to do the same in Round 2, but we lost four tenths of that lap, so I’m not really sure what happened. Just a little less grip. a bit, something about warming up tires or something I could have done differently, but the top 10 is pretty solid. I would be happy with a slightly higher starting position here, but I think I have a good chance tomorrow.”

RINIS VEEKAY, NO, 21 BITCOIN RACING TEAM WITH BITNILE ED CARPENTER RACING CHEVROLET, QUALIFICATION 14TH: We really got better from practice to qualifying, but we should be able to progress. A car appeared in front of me on my second lap, so even though my timing should have increased, it didn’t. It’s disappointing, but we’re definitely moving in the right direction. We need to be in good shape for tomorrow’s warm-up and we have some good things to try for the race.

CONOR DALY, NO. 20 BITNILE ED CARPENTER RACING CHEVROLET. QUALIFICATION 15TH: Our qualifying session was a bit chaotic. To make one round and only be about a tenth and a half of a transfer is actually a good step forward for us. Last year we fought here, I’m proud of the team that worked so hard for this BitNile car. We’re just going after him in the races. It will be very interesting with the relegation of the tyres, we have a set of reds saved. We’ll see what happens. We are close, must be close!”

KYLE KIRKWOOD, NO.14 SEXTON PROPERTIES AJ FOYT RACING CHEVROLET, QUALIFICATION 17TH:

“So, with the qualifiers done, we were one of the few to do the red and it paid off for us because we took the lead in the first half of the qualifiers. With the red coming out, we were almost very lucky there. In the end, we qualified, I think P9 in our group. Not exactly where we wanted but I think we found some pace between practice one, practice two and qualifying. We continue to improve, and we will go into the final practice tomorrow morning hopefully with a good race car and the most important thing here is to make the tires last. If we can do that, we have a lot of people starting around us who should also be up front and hopefully we can move forward from there.”

DALTON KELLETT, NO. 4 K-LINE AJ FOYT RACING CHEVROLET, QUALIFICATION 24TH:

“Our last qualifier of the year and not where we wanted to be in the P24 qualifiers. We’ve closed the gap from where we were at the start of the weekend so I’m glad we found a bit of time on those new tires and we’ve turned red red but I can’t really find a gap. in the first lap it was because we started at the back of the pit lane and only because of that accordion effect. So in that second set, it was really tight going in and it was pretty much hand over hand and grabbing the clutch that went in and I didn’t quite get it into pit lane pace. Then we sat there and changed tires to a moving car, so when I rolled, I picked up speed over the pit lane, and we docked there. We have to get through it and it may not help us. It wasn’t enough to move there about seven tenths. But the real question tomorrow is how well we keep the tires under us for the long term. That’s the name of the game here with how abrasive the track surface is.”

JOSEF NEWGARDEN, NO. 2 CHEVROLET PENSKE HITACHI TEAM, QUALIFICATION 25TH:

“I just made a mistake, what a shame. I think we have the fastest car in the field here, so, yeah, it’s disappointing, it’s disappointing for everyone. It’s not over but it’s not ideal, what just happened here. It is what it is.”

SIMONA DESILVESTRO, NO. 16 YEARS SWITZERLAND PARETTA AUTO SPORT CHEVROLET, QUALIFICATION 26TH:

It was a tough day. We were stuck behind the guys who did the gap and we didn’t do a (good) lap which is disappointing. This morning I feel it will be a good day and we will get a good qualifying result. After all, it is what it is and we will go out there tomorrow and do our best.
